Basic Skills Course
: Foundational skills in reading, writing, mathematics, learning skills, study skills, and English as a Second Language which are necessary for students to succeed in college-level work. At MSJC any course # less than 070, i.e. Math050 or Engl061.
California Community Colleges State Apportionment:
is primarily driven by the Full‐Time Equivalent Student (FTES) workload measure. FTES is not "headcount enrollment," but is the equivalent of 525 hours of student instruction per each FTES. For example, the 2007‐08 Fiscal Year, the funding rate for each CREDIT FTES is $4,564.83 (this is a uniform CREDIT FTES rate for all community college districts and is adjusted annually for COLA) [the NONCREDIT FTES rate for the same period is $2,744.96, while the rate for Career Development and College Preparation (CDCP) NONCREDIT FTES is $3,232.07]. CDCP Noncredit FTES is generated by Noncredit courses that are eligible to received an enhanced noncredit rate.
CAP (as used in the D.S.S.):
The total under of classroom seats available to be occupied by students in a given term.
A student who is enrolled in the current session and who was enrolled in the previous regular session.
Decision Support System (D.S.S.):
An Enrollment Management System (EMS) designed to help colleges plan, analyze and manage class schedules. The report displays classes by subject, course #, instructor, dean, location, room #, start date, FTES, % of Cap and much more. MSJC’s D.S.S. can be accessed by logging onto
, click on “Login as Guest” then clicking “Enroll. Mgt. System” then “View Reports” then “Sect. & Sum. (Active)” then the desired Location you wish to view and finally “View Data” and “Open”.
Developmental Education Course:
(as defined at MSJC) DEV = course section # less than 100 aka ‘below college level’ courses
Distance Education (DE):
means instruction in which the instructor and student are separated by distance and interact through the assistance of communication technology. Whether a course is to be considered as DE, the basic criterion established in the GUIDELINES (March 2004) under Section 55205 needs to be applied (i.e., a distance education course/section or session utilizes technology 51 percent or more of the time to deliver instruction during the course term.) In determining the type of distance education modality to assign to a course, the predominant mode of delivery, in terms of time spent, is then applied to course sections where multiple distance education delivery modes (i.e., Internet, television, video tape, etc.) are present.
Traditional classroom instruction. 51% or more of course delivery is done with the student and instructor in the same location.
50 Percent Law:
The “50 Percent Law”, requires California Community College districts to spend each fiscal year 50% of the current expense of education for payment of salaries of classroom instructors. The intent of the statute is to limit class size and contain the relative growth of administrative and non instructional costs.
A Student enrolled in college for the first time after High School. The first time a studentenrolls in a primary term this element should be coded as '1', even if the student was previously enrolled in a summer session. For example, if a student enrolls at the college for the first time during a summer term and subsequently enrolls during a fall term the student should be coded as '1' for both terms.
First-Time Transfer Student:
A student enrolled at the reporting college for the first time and who transferred from another institution of higher education.
Full Time Equivalent Student (FTES)
1 FTES = 15 contact hrs/wk x 17.5 wks x 2 semesters = 525 contact hrs. An FTES represents 525 class (contact) hours of student instruction/activity in credit and noncredit courses. FTES is one of the workload measures used in the computation of state aid for California Community Colleges. Formerly called "average daily attendance," (ADA) was theoretically derived by considering that one student could be enrolled in courses for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, for an academic year of 35 weeks‐‐‐so basically, a total of 525 hours per one FTES (3 x 5 x 35 = 525).
A student enrolled for 12 or more semester credits (units), or 12 or more quarter credits
Hybrid Course Course:
delivery is within guidelines of DE but a portion of instruction is with the student and instructor in the same location.
A student enrolled for either less than 12 semester credits (units).
Percent of Cap (as used in the D.S.S.):
The % of classroom seats available occupied by students in a given term (i.e. a 40 seat CAP with 36 seats occupied = 36/40 or a 90% CAP)
The number of students enrolled in the current fall semester that were also students in the previous fall semester.
: The collection of all individuals or items under consideration in a statistical study.
The number of students who earned (a non-successful grade) “D, F, NC, I or W” who subsequently re-enrolled in the same course
The number of “A, B, C, CR, P, D, F, NC, NP and I ” grades divided by the total number of all grades (A, B, C, CR, P, D, F, NC, NP, I and W)
A student enrolled at the reporting college after an absence of one or more primary terms.
: A subet of a population. The part of the population from which information is obtained. Samples are collected and statistics are calculated from the sample so that one can make inferences or extrapolations from the sample to the polulation.
Special Admit Student:
currently enrolled in K-12 (see SB11 Student-Education-Status).
